Just came across this video. I have an SDS6 DRO on my lathe. The instructions which came with it are less than clear to say the least. Your video, along with other articles found on the internet are a vluable resource. Any more observations you may like to share on your expriences with using this piece of equipment would be welcome.

I have the exact same one, other than the name. I use mine on my mill, though I’ve been thinking of getting one for my lathe too. It’s pretty good. The only problem is that the buttons require me to use my other hand when pressing them, as the force needed is fairly high. I did have to add washers and a lock nut for the swing arm, mounted on the mill, as it’s too loosey goosy. I also added a needle thrust bearing and a lock nut under the readout for smoother movement, as it tended to jerk around.

The reason tool two was off .040 at the 22:56 mark was at tool one you took a cut backed off the tool then measured the part THEN set the DRO with the side backed off the part. you should of just slid the Z axis right measured the part and set x zero there not moving the X axis

Tony, as a Tool and Die maker, thanks for admitting you (we) make mistakes. So many people from co-workers to engineers to upper management always want to say "Why is this taking so long?" So & So never made mistakes. Well we think....(insert stupid statement here)".
Point being these people can't even turn on the machines we run, let alone make precision parts, proto-types, molds or die assemblies.
When someone tells me they don't make mistakes, they just told me they are a liar. When someone willingly admits to their mistake, they just told me they have character.

Wow! I have just one DRO on my mill - I am getting a DRO for my smaller lathe in next few days - this is amazing! I only did bolt patters with the mill using a dro - I wonder what else this sucker can do - have to test the other functionality presented!

                            Tony,
any future DRO installs, please consider TouchDRO: smaller, more compact, much cheaper, app works on any Android device via bluetooth .... the way of the future. Makes the DRO Pros outfit and the like look like mid 2000's era technology.

See that Sino box is just a dro it can't do anything else (besides take up a bunch of space). your android device on the other hand, can be your DRO _AND do anything else_ -- like, for instance, you can minimize your DRO app during your machining operation so you can browse the web to look up "what's the drill size for a 1/4-32 tap?" You can minimize the app and bring up tables you have stored on your Android device (i do that from time to time), or sometimes I bring up my TI-83 app to double check a calculation and a dimension --- then go right back to your DRO app

I'm good with everything except why the DRO needs to know the difference between tools. ? It seems it would only need to know the zeroed out location of each tool so it knows where it is when selected. Do I need to go back to kindergarten?? 😕
