Isn't that way too much thermal paste? Might be an old wives tale (as much as old women talk about thermal conductive paste), but I always understood that too much paste works against proper thermal conductivity. Instead using a thin layer is better.

Professional TEG's do work, but take a lot more heat, with some using liquid coolant. They tend to need full fireplace levels of temps to work though. But yes, you can get enough heat out of them to charge devices pretty well... tea candles though... the BTU output there just doesn't add up.

I have a standard 40 gallon hot water heater with a gas burner. It's one of the "smart" kind and both the igniter, gas valve and thermostat are powered by a battery... a LiIon rechargeable kind. But,.. it has no mains electrical power connection. What keeps it charged? It has a TEG of the thermocouple variety. Been 5 Years now. So useful, when we had to replace our gas forced hot air heater, we found one that runs everything of a TEG as well! 500W capacity for this thing! Also have a portable TEG fueled by the same sort of gas cannister a camp stove uses. 250W. and outputs 120VAC.

The thing is that you almost need 1 amp to charge a phone properly. Smartphones with fast charging can suck up to 2.2 amp at a voltage of 5 volts. A few phones with ultra fast charging can be charged with a voltage of 12 volts and 2 amps of current. so this setup is waaay under powerd

For a flexible fuel TEG, what if you used 2 containers with modules sandwiched between them? Fill cold side with cold alcohol or antifreeze. Fill hot side with heated thermal oil.
Cold-side liquid could be left outside during winter months. Hot-side oil could be heated with either fire or solar via Fresnel lens or parabolic reflector.
Seems like that would give better control of temps on hot side (to keep the heat under the module’s recommended max operating temp) and allow flexibility for heat sources. As well, with a thermos, hot oil could be stored until it’s time to use the TEG or refill the hot side.
                                                      Just an idea.

                                                                                        Try a double-ended-flatten-coil-tubing(copper)
And with a PC cooling system, probably one with a pump and reservoir.(helps with the cooling)

For the heat, you could use a heatsink with the other end of the copper tube.(whilst still having the candle to provide heat)

Attach a small power bank as a mean to get power instead of plugging in phone.

Pls , if you see this consider trying it out.
